Kim Jong Un has overseen hypersonic missile tests, citing global security tensions and the need to strengthen nuclear deterrence. Analysts say the launch signals Pyongyang’s intent to counter missile defences amid rising regional and international strain.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen test flights of hypersonic missiles, highlighting the need to strengthen the country’s nuclear deterrent amid what state media described as a worsening global security environment. The tests were confirmed by the Korean Central News Agency a day after neighbouring countries reported detecting multiple ballistic missile launches.
According to KCNA, the drills were intended to assess the readiness and operational capability of North Korea’s hypersonic weapon system, with missiles striking targets about 1,000 kilometres away over the sea east of the country. Kim said the tests marked progress in critical defence technologies and stressed the need to continuously upgrade offensive weapons.
The launch came amid heightened regional tensions, including US actions in Venezuela that Pyongyang has condemned as violations of sovereignty. Analysts say the tests may be aimed at signalling North Korea’s ability to penetrate regional missile defence systems, as well as reinforcing deterrence ahead of key diplomatic meetings and an upcoming ruling party congress.
