A senior Russian military officer has been killed after a bomb detonated beneath his car in southern Moscow. Investigators say Ukrainian intelligence involvement is among the lines of inquiry, marking another high-profile attack amid the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war.
A senior Russian military official was killed on Monday morning after an explosive device detonated beneath his vehicle in southern Moscow, Russian investigators confirmed, in what appears to be a targeted attack.
Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the operational training directorate of the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, succumbed to his injuries following the blast, according to Svetlana Petrenko, spokesperson for Russia’s Investigative Committee.
Petrenko said investigators are exploring multiple motives behind the killing, including the possibility that the attack was organized by Ukrainian intelligence services.
Russian media reported that the explosion occurred at around 7am in a parking area on Yaseneva Street, with Sarvarov inside the vehicle at the time of the blast. Images released by authorities showed investigators examining the wreckage at the scene.
The killing comes amid a series of high-profile attacks targeting senior Russian military figures. In December 2024, Ukraine’s security service claimed responsibility for the assassination of Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, head of Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical protection forces. Kirillov and his assistant were killed when a bomb concealed in an electric scooter exploded outside his Moscow apartment, a day after Kyiv announced criminal charges against him.
While Ukrainian officials have not commented on Monday’s incident, the latest attack is likely to further escalate tensions as Russia’s war in Ukraine continues.
