Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, appeared in a New York federal court for the first time after being seized in a US military operation, pleading not guilty to narco-terrorism, drug trafficking and weapons charges. Maduro described himself as Venezuela’s president and a prisoner of war, while his defence raised concerns over injuries allegedly sustained during the raid. Outside the court, protesters and supporters clashed as emotions ran high. If convicted, both could face life imprisonment.
