Donald Trump has revived calls for annexing Greenland, citing US security interests. Denmark and Greenland rejected the idea, warning Washington to stop threats and respect international law amid growing concern over US global actions.

US President Donald Trump has once again proposed annexing Greenland, arguing that the island is vital to US national security. His remarks prompted strong pushback from Danish and Greenlandic leaders, who rejected any notion of US control and stressed respect for international law. Denmark’s prime minister said the US has no right to annex territory within the Danish kingdom, while Greenland’s prime minister dismissed the idea as a “fantasy.”
The renewed controversy follows recent US military action in Venezuela, raising fears that Washington could use coercive pressure to pursue strategic interests elsewhere. Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, has self-rule but relies on Denmark for defence and foreign policy. Despite some support for eventual independence, Greenlanders overwhelmingly oppose becoming part of the United States.
