A doctor at Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla has been accused of physically assaulting a patient, prompting widespread outrage and protests after a video of the incident circulated on social media on Monday.
Rahul Rao, Medical Superintendent of IGMC, said disciplinary action against the accused doctor has been initiated and a detailed report has been sought. He added that further steps would be taken once the report is reviewed.
Rao confirmed that the victim has filed a police complaint and that an FIR has been registered against the doctor.
The viral video shows the doctor allegedly punching a patient who was lying on a hospital bed, while the patient attempts to defend himself by kicking. Two other individuals are seen trying to intervene and restrain both men. The patient reportedly sustained a nose injury during the altercation.
The footage, recorded by a person accompanying the patient, quickly spread online, triggering anger among locals and patients. Hundreds of people later gathered outside the hospital premises to protest and demand action.
According to the patient, a resident of Nerwa in Shimla district, he had visited the hospital for an endoscopy and was advised to rest for a few hours. He said he was instructed to lie down on an empty bed, where the alleged incident occurred.
The patient claimed that the doctor arrived shortly afterwards and began behaving inappropriately. When he objected and asked the doctor to maintain decorum, he was allegedly assaulted.
The accused doctor, however, has denied the allegations, claiming that the patient misbehaved with him first.
Authorities said the matter is under investigation as patients and local residents continue to demand strict action against the doctor.
